IP-based DSL Offering
Most DSL services are based on ATM infrastructure. Compared to
ATM, IP is more efficient and cost-effective for data service
delivery. ZyXEL’s IES-1000, an IP-based DSL access multiplexer
(DSLAM), terminates all the ATM circuits and converts the traffic
directly to the Internet environment. The deployment of the IES-
1000 can save a lot of effort and cost in regards to ATM backbone
investment and maintenance.

Small to Medium Enterprises (SME) need the same broadband
data services that large businesses enjoy. But most SMEs can not
afford the expensive enterprise data solutions, such as T1/E1
service, that the large corporations employ. G.shdsl is an
alternative technology to offer leased-line service over existing
copper wires. The IES-1000 is the most cost-effective solution for
service providers targeting the SME market.
New Advances for Broadband Service Offering
The VLAN feature in the IES-1000 offers the benefits of both
security and performance. Multicasting design improves network
bandwidth utilization for bandwidth-consuming application, such
as video on demand. New mechanisms, such as 802.1p, have also
emerged to ensure quality of service. The new advances in the
IES-1000 enable service providers to turn up broadband service to
more customers quickly and at a lower cost than previously possible.
Compact Design for Limited Space
The IES-1000 fits the standard Telecom rack space with its 1U
height. Its compactness is perfect for limited space or collocation.
Scalable Platform for Future Expansion
The flexible design of the IES-1000 allows service providers to
start G.shdsl service at a minimum cost. As the number of
subscribers and applications grow, the additional IES-1000 can be
added to increase the available customer base.
Integrated Ethernet Switch
Specifications
The ZyXEL IES-1000, G.shdsl Ethernet Switch,
is ideally suited for delivering broadband IP
services to multi-tenant unit (MTU) buildings, such
as: office building, residential multi-dwelling units,
educational & industrial campuses, etc. It is also
ideal for providing high-speed internet access over
copper wires to public facilities, such as:
convention centers, airports, shopping centers and
train stations. Besides MTU applications, with 2.3
Mbps symmetric transmission characteristics over
single loop, the IES-1000 is also applicable for
leased-line replacement. Using TC-PAM
modulation technique, the IES-1000 is compatible
with other existing transmission technologies,
allowing service providers to deploy the IES-1000
where broadband services already exist.
The IES-1000 supports high-speed data
transmission up to 2.3 Mbps over single copper
pair, and is a 16-port G.shdsl switch with a 1U
rack height enclosure. Each enclosure is equipped
with two 8-port G.shdsl modules with hot-
swappable capability. The 10/100M Ethernet
interface is designed for uplink to a layer 2/3
switch or to a broadband router.
The IES-1000 also offers service providers
extensive management capabilities, the entire IES-
1000 is managed using ZyXEL’s NetaVista, an
element management system (EMS).
The information concerning configuration control,
system status, performance index, alarm trap, etc.
are forwarded from the IES-1000 to NetaVista,
which delivers service providers a comprehensive
service results report. In addition to remote
management capability, a console port is used for
local management.
